The importance of lifelong learning

Lifelong learning is important in changing technology and career demands, improving cognitive health, and developing digital skills. Its implementation in the workplace can be done through diverse training programs, performance appraisals, and a combination of formal and informal learning experiences. Lifelong learning is becoming increasingly important in the face of rapid technological advances and an unpredictable job market. The relevance of lifelong learning is key in adapting to changing technology and career demands, ensuring individuals remain relevant in the digital and global economy. A lifelong learning approach also encourages adaptability and personal development. In addition, lifelong learning also affects one’s cognitive health. Continuous learning positively impacts cognitive health, and this should start early. Unfortunately, the implementation of lifelong learning in the formal education system is often ineffective.

In the digital age, digital skills have become very important. Organizations must provide adequate training to their employees to ensure they can use digital tools and platforms effectively. This is important to keep employees relevant and able to contribute in an increasingly digitalized work environment.

To enhance lifelong learning in the workplace, companies should encourage employee curiosity and adaptability through diverse training programs. These programs provide opportunities for employees to explore new interests and develop the skills necessary to adapt to a changing work environment. Regular evaluation of skills and competencies is also important in integrating lifelong learning into career development plans. By regularly reviewing employee performance and providing feedback, companies can help align individual aspirations with organizational needs.

The importance of a combination of formal and informal learning experiences should also not be overlooked. Access to online training, workshops, and mentorship can enhance lifelong learning potential and allow employees to access learning materials according to their needs and interests. Overall, lifelong learning is becoming increasingly important in the face of technological change and unpredictable job market demands. Organizations should encourage employees to continue learning and developing skills to stay relevant in the digital and global economy.

Charoenkiatkan et al. (2024) conducted a study on a lifelong learning curriculum developed to improve the quality of life of older adults in Thailand. The curriculum consists of eight main elements covering physical and mental changes, well-being, health, and holistic integration. The training lasted two days and used lectures, discussions, and multimedia support. The initial evaluation showed that participants had a moderate quality of life before the training, but after the training, there was a significant increase in knowledge, understanding, and positive attitudes toward the activities introduced. This indicates that the curriculum is effective in improving the quality of life of the elderly.
