Recently, Google developed a new feature to detect scams (scams, phishing) using AI technology. This new feature is currently being tested in Chrome Canary, the experimental version of Google Chrome. In addition, this feature will utilize on-device LLM to analyze your device’s websites. As mentioned in Leo’s post on X, the new flag in Chrome Canary enables a feature called “Client Side Detection Brand and Intent for Scam Detection,” which uses a Long Language Model (LLM) to analyze web pages on your device. This feature is believed to assist scam detection services in identifying the brand and purpose (intent) of web pages, making it easier to recognize potential scam.
Chrome’s AI-powered scam detection feature
Although it is not yet clear how this feature works, it can issue a warning when you visit a website that is clearly a scam site. For example, if you visit a fake Microsoft technical support page claiming that your computer is infected and asking you to call a number, AI Chrome can analyze the brand or language promoted on that page. If it detects fraudulent tactics such as false urgency or suspicious domains, AI Chrome can display a warning advising you not to interact with the page or share personal information.
Chrome’s Enhanced Protection is now powered by AI
This new feature is being tested in Chrome Canary and can be linked to Chrome’s Enhanced Protection feature, which now also uses AI. Before October, Enhanced Protection did not use AI. This feature was described as “proactive protection,” but since then it has been updated to “AI-powered protection.”
Google is likely using pre-trained data to analyze web content and warn users about scams or harmful sites. In addition, Google is still testing this AI-powered security and privacy feature in Chrome, and it is unclear when further details will be shared.
